The generous folks at SLRgear have taken the time to directly compare these two lenses and conclude: The Canon 85mm f/1.8 is an excellent buy, probably even a best buy. Unless you require the extra stop and the slightly better optical performance of the Canon 85mm f/1.2L, you might well be happy with the f/1.8 lens -- Not to mention the extra $1450 in your pocket!

Basically, they found that at apertures smaller than f/4, the two lenses were almost identical, with corner sharpness being the biggest difference at wider apertures. Given that at f/1.8 most of your subject will be (intentionally) out of focus, I would be little concerned with corner sharpness!

I certainly can't see any differences that would merit the price difference. Buy the less expensive lens and an airline ticket to a beautiful location, you'll be a better photographer for the experience!

I understand there are significant differences on lens prices.
For example Canon has a Canon Telephoto EF 85mm f/1.2L for around $2000.
They have another lens same focal length 1.8 for about $500.
Other than aperture, where do you see the difference? Is the image that much sharper and cleaner with the more expensive lens, or do you need the full frame, big expensive high end camera to see real differences?

Zeiss has always made excellent lenses, but these days they seem quaintly archaic. No auto focus, manual aperture operation, no electronic integration at all makes them of limited appeal on a DSLR.
